🍜 Warungs: Your Best Friend

A warung is a small, family-run Indonesian eatery. For around $3–5 AUD, you can get a full plate of nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), or a rice dish with meat and vegetables. Warungs are found on virtually every street in Legian. Look for busy ones with Indonesian locals eating — that's your quality indicator.

🥤 Fruit Warungs and Fresh Juice

Bali produces incredible tropical fruit: mango, papaya, pineapple, rambutan, and dragon fruit. Fresh fruit plates cost around $1–2 AUD. Fresh juice (es buah or jus) runs $1.50–3. These make excellent cheap breakfasts or afternoon snacks and are far better value than anything at a hotel buffet.

• Legian Beach at sunset — completely free, and one of the best sunsets you'll ever see. The light turns the waves gold and the sky pink; it's genuinely magical.
• Temple visits — many of Bali's roadside and community temples (pura) are free to enter or ask for a small donation. A sarong is required (usually provided for a small hire fee at the entrance). Respect the ceremony if one is happening.
• Kuta Beachwalk promenade — the coastal path between Legian and Kuta is perfect for an evening walk. Free entertainment from street performers and hawkers along the way.
• Paddy field walks in Ubud — the famous rice terrace walks (particularly Jatiluwih and Tegallalang) charge a small entry fee (~$2–4 AUD) but are worth every cent for the views. The walk itself is the activity.

Grab and Gojek (Indonesian equivalents of Uber) are the best way to get around Bali affordably. A 20-minute trip across Legian typically costs $2–5 AUD. Download both apps before you arrive — prices vary and one is often cheaper than the other. Note that some areas (particularly near beach entrances and hotel driveways) have informal restrictions on where ride-share cars can pick up; you may need to walk 50–100m.

🛵 Scooter Rental

For adventurous travellers comfortable on two wheels, scooter rental costs around $7–12 AUD per day. This is the cheapest way to explore independently. However: Bali traffic can be intense, roads are not always well-maintained, and riding without a valid international licence creates insurance complications. Make sure you're comfortable and that your travel insurance covers motorcycle accidents (many don't by default).

🚐 Private Driver Day Hire

For day trips, hiring a private driver with a car is often the best value option for groups. A full day (8–10 hours) to multiple destinations costs around $40–60 AUD total for the vehicle — split between 3–4 people, that's $10–15 each.
